Too many quotes is.............

Post by Someone-Else »

Hello All. A request if I may. It is NOT a forum rule, so if you feel you want to take the mick, and look stupid, that is up to you. Like most folk I read 80-90% of a post to see if I can contribute in anyway, but recently I find it harder as some folk are miss-using the quote button, see example below.
person 4 wrote: Hi this is person 4, I am not sure why you are asking how tall I am as you can not see me, and if you could what good would it do? blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah (a different shape gear stick)
person two wrote:Hi I am just replying to your question person one, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah I am doing this by pressing the "quote button" Instead of clicking the "reply button"
person one wrote: Hi this is person one, I have a legitimate question to ask, my question is, how tall are you? blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
As you see, the person replying has pressed the "quote button" instead of the reply button, which is all very well if it is of use, but then the next person does the same thing, so you end up with a quote of a quote which means you have to read through loads of duplicated post.

You may not have noticed but if you right click and drag the cursor along, you can then "insert quote" of just a few words, as shown below.

Which means it is easier to read/understand, and you only quote the bits you need to.

Thanks for reading.
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Inept people use the QUOTE BUTTON instead of the QUICK REPLY section :-)

Deliberate, sorry for that...

When I saw the thread title I thought it was going to be about getting quotes from trades and how that can be confusing...

The reason for this is that, if you look at a post without being signed in, and decide to comment, at the TOP RIGHT is the "quote" button - as we all know. When you click that, the login box comes up and away you go - the inexperienced think it's normal.

I'm annoyed by those who then type their reply within the quotes!

The offending parties, the ones that offend S-E, do not realise that the proper way to respond is to use the "Post Reply" button, which is at the LOWER LEFT. So some of the issue is due to the way the forum default layout is set up. It's easily changed by the webmaster if anybody was really bothered.

I must admit, I thought this was going to be something to do with getting too many quotes in from trades too.
Haste is the enemy of quality.
