New highway code rules

Post by Someone-Else »

Did you know from Saturday the highway code rules change, giving priority to pedestrians, the cyclists, then horse riders?

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

New highway code rules

Oh dear, so much misinformation about regards the new rules, at about 5 mins in that chap says you have to give way to cyclists joining a roundabout from the left. Completely wrong.

The part about cycling in the middle of the lane is only partially correct.

The part about opening the door with the opposite hand is correct, it's called the "Dutch reach", something I've been doing for years. However there is no £1,000 Fine for not doing so. It's a recommendation.

For a more informative/well reasoned explanation of how the new rules affect motorists/cyclists/pedestrians and horses watch these videos:-

Fortunately, this doesn't apply to white vans. We have our own highway code. Two rules: "Me first". And in the event of a van-on-van conflict, biggest van wins.

I heard that it was now the drivers fault if, when turning left at a junction, a cyclist undertaking gets creamed.

If this is so then I suggest undertaking on the motorways is legalised. It's just as stupid.
Don't take it personally......

This has been very poorly marketed to DRIVERS, CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS.

Lord knows what’s going to happen from the 29th

Doesn't apply to BMW drivers!

Didn't take much notice but the bit about giving way to pedestrians waiting to cross a minor road you're turning in to, or coming out of, I learnt when I passed my test in 1975, nearly fifty years ago. Behaving similarly to cyclists is just common courtesy.

Can't wait to see Jeremy Clarkson's comment at the back of next week's Sunday Times! (I won't see it until next Wednesday, when I lift it out of my neighbour's recycling bin).

Do the new clauses cover e-scooters? Just come back from Tenerife and they're a menace!

I stopped to let pedestrians cross in front of me when turning out of a side road during my mock motorcycle test about 15 years ago or so, about an hour before my actual test. The instructor said I'd have failed my test for that for "undue hesitation" if it wasn't a mock. Obviously he was an instructor, not an examiner though.

Yep. It's pretty underpowered. Have to really rev it just to bump it up a curb - clutch it gonna be shot in no time.

I had also thought giving way to pedestrians when you turn in and out of a side road was already the rules?

The thing that does frustrate me is the cyclists rules do seem to give them more free reign and it is the drivers fault if things go wrong. I've also seen cyclists using mobile phones and trying to balance on their bikes swerving all over the place when I'm driving past them - perhaps a rule should've been added to ban them using phones whilst riding as well like drivers have too?

If you watch all the BBB videos, he goes on to say he doesn't think the rules are very good, he and his family almost got run over.
