Undercoating fresh Satin on top of old Satin??

After spending a good while sifting through posts for an answer to my question thought it just be easier to register and post my own question

Got a job coming where the customer wants some paint freshening up that was only painted 12 months.

Walls are staying the same colour so that’s the easy bit. They’ve got half height wood panelling everywhere that is a white satin finish at the moment and they want the same going on top. Could i get away with key, dust, wipe and top coat with Satin or would it be best to undercoat first? I’ve been told over the years that satin is self undercoating but i’ve never put it to the test. With there being so much woodwork and it only being painted in the last 12 months, and the woodwork in good repair thought it was worth asking because of the extra time it would take and the cost to customer if undercoated.

I use Johnstones Aqua system so would be Johnstones undercoat and Aqua Guard Satin White.

***Side question, they want some oiled doors bringing White Satin too. Would the best protocol be to wire wool with spirits to remove all oil/wax and then Zinnser Bin? I don’t know of anything that can go straight on top of the oil finished door, unless anyone can suggest anything?

I have gone straight over satin with Johnstones satin, it works well as long as you clean well and get any grease or silicones off. I use a mini roller and get it on quickly as it goes off fast. On the oiled doors, you need to get them as clean as you can and the problem is the oil is soaked well in. In essence, you need to get the surface clean so that the BIN has the best chance of sticking all over. I have not tried this myself but I imagine the doors would be prone to chipping. I would use car spray thinners to clean and see how that goes but probably not the best job to take on as failure is a high probability.

Aqua guard needs an undercoat, unless you are going over exisiting water based satin

Its a great product, but what lets it down compared to similar products is adhesion...

I would consider a multi surface paint like bedec msp instead.

Many thanks for the replies, it’s all water based so should be fine going on top then after making sure surface is sound and clean

Might give the doors a wide berth for now, someone else as mentioned a good sand and Zinnser cover stain, I know that sticks really well Seems like there’s a few different approaches on it and don’t really want be experimenting on the job on a full set of doors right through Prob have a play with some scraps of wood in the shed first see what holds up best
