it is directly in line off sight through 2 glass doors and one window plus the wooden shed wall/door just wondered iff the signal would reach as the present router is perhaps 5-10 years old

I figured it doesn't work. But as I also said

you could always get a wi-fi extender. (It does what it says on the tin) You can even get ones that you plug into your mains at one end and plug in an Ethernet cable at the other (your shed)

Google for wi-fi extender. (Loads of them out there)

You mention a 'dongle' b-a. By their nature (small size) they don't have anything like a decent antenna to pick up the signal so have a limited range. You could try attaching it via a USB extension cable and hang it higher up and close to the shed window.

I know (since I live in a wooden house) that wet walls seriously attenuate the signal - even damp wood does - so putting the sender and receiver at the windows should improve things.

You can configure an old wi-fi router as a repeater (pain in the ass though) but the simple mains cable extenders you get from Tesco work well - but they have to be on the same ring (or spur) circuit so if you fit a socket at each end of the power cable from the house to the shed and plug them in they'll make a huge difference.

One other thing - if your wi-fi stuff is old you are at a disadvantage. Newer wi-fi devices (and dongles) operate on higher frequencies and at faster speeds and have a much better quality signal so if your gear is over 5-8 years old consider investing in a new wi-fi router before coughing up for extenders.

i actually have talk talk extenders[that dont reach the shed] that they gave me free with a free tv box that i tried for a week but stopped using as i didnt like the format for finding programs as it was typing in the name like an old phone as in a key covers say abc and three clicks to get a c so perhaps 20=30 move to select a program not happening

not going to spend any money unless it has some value in return and from memory the only advert and cost free content is bbc i player on the cromecast unless things have changed so more an experiment to see what has changed and iff it has any useful features i didnt know about i think it was perhaps 5 or 6 years ago when i got it

i actually have a redundant phone extension going to the shed can that be utilised ?? as in no to virtually no cost??
or should i just power up the cromecast in the house and see whats new before commiting any further effort lol

The shed is at one end, what is at the other end? The house?
In theory you could use it, but it would need "adapting"
I would be inclined to check your Chromecast dongle in the house first.

in the last few years i have never down loaded an app it was simplistic then but now its full off manipulation and adverts and please whilst you comments are well ment and thank you for that i dont need condescending
remember we all have different abilities and skills what comes naturally to one is a mountain to climb to another and that includes me
i will get told how to do something but iff i dont do it say ten times over 2 days and perhaps once or twice a week i will forget i am neither thick nor intelligent i am just big all and my brain dictates what i can and cannot do

got the cromecast working in the house a few seconds ago so will try it in the shed tomorrow not expecting it to work but will try and let you know
