Ceiling hole repair?

I’m fitting a ceiling fan & have cut out this bit of the ceiling so I can install some timber & attach the bracket to that as you can see. So as you can see in the first pic the joist is there level but in the second pic on the opposite side there was this piece in the way which is a little higher so I’ve vertically attached a timber onto it so that it’s all level. Now I obviously need to board it how should I go about doing it & should I install the bracket first onto that timber or board then attach it? Sorry if that’s confusing!

So is this a ceiling fan along the lines of a large light fitting fixed to the ceiling and hung below it? You want to let a piece of plasterboard into the square hole so you can make good?

Get a length of 3x1 (75mm x 25mm) or nearest timber and cut to required length(s). Put a length up into the void, hold it flat (use a clamp if necessary) half in & half out. screw up through the existing, remaining, ceiling into the 3x1, this will give you a flange all the way round.

Cut your replacement p/board panel (if you were clever you would've kept the piece you cut out), press it up against the flange & drive in more screws. Black bugle heads, 25mm or 38mm will do fine.

Fill the joints, sand & repaint (the whole ceiling, ideally).

Ok so it's a ceiling fan for a bedroom which is why I cut open the ceiling to add the timber support for it to attach to. What I would like to know is when boarding the square hole back up to make good is do I have to screw the timbers that I will be adding to the sides for the flange to the joist or do I just place them & screw through existing ceiling with the drywall screws? The timbers I am using are 38mm thick x 63mm width.

You really want a solid bit of backing all around the perimeter of the patch. I'd chuck some 3x2,4x2 or 3x1 or 4x1, whatever you've got knocking around. Cut it a few inch longer than the hole and thread it up through. You will need a bit either side of joist. Screw up into through existing ceiling making sure it's tight. Back the screw off and 're screw if you have a gap. Put a few in to it then 're screw your patch. Fill or skim the patch, sand decorate then fit bracket last.

Yes I’ve cut the ceiling open a bit more since those pics. I’ve got two joists & will put the timber pieces between them. My concern was whether screwing through the ceiling with the drywall screws to attach it would be strong enough?
