Electricity use (Please)

Post by Someone-Else »

Information
Like most of you (I presume) I am trying to cut down the amount of electricity we use (We have had LED lamps everywhere for years) but it got me thinking, I don't want to fall down the stairs, so I turn the landing light on. If I leave a room, I turn off the light (And yep, the old one, the Mrs turns it back on again  ) but I was thinking I have nothing to compare our usage to, this is where you nice people come in. (Please, if you don't mind)

Question.
What was your last months' electricity usage? (If like us you are with eon, you can go on line and look, if you really want to help) Not interested in how much you paid, just how many KWH you used.

Facts
Last month we used 337 KWH
For the fun of it, Over December we used 505 KWH (It was Christmas, and electricity was cheaper then)

I'm not sure if the answers you will get will allow you to compare apples with apples as there are far too many variables between homes and the number of people in them.

FWIW, ours for April was 231 - 4 people at home, all led lights, 2 freezers, occasional use of tumble dryer and we have PV (April 2019 - pre Solar, we used 419)

The cost of ours isn't worth comparing as we are on a deal until June

Old fridges and freezers use more lecky than most people realise, and tumble dryers too!

Can't you look back at older bills?

Lol at the moment the PV we installed is working well and despite bad days we are almost off grid.

Now to change supplier when our fixed rate ends to get a better SEG than EDF offer.

One thing that smart meter and PV has done is to review our usage to be more efficient , previously we really didn’t bother to much , so now it’s win win , even making sure we do washing on good days and dishwasher mid day , and turning of stuff that’s not necessary, we still consume around 140w minimum with standby stuff ect and of course the fridge.

i use 4.5-4.6kw per day
i use pir bulbs from ebay in areas i pass through they use between 0.5-1w off and 6-8w for the 20 or so seconds they stay on
they will stay on longer if your there but need movement to stop switching off so iff a light turning off occasionally bothers you the dont buy them

random link
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... s&_sacat=0

what we also need to remember all our bills have been front loaded by around £56 a year added to the standing charge to pay for the electrical companies that went to the wall
we are all ------------------still learning

154 Kwh for April. Led lights everywhere. Audio/visual stuff goes to sleep at night. Usually just the two of us here. We time our washing when it's a dry day so limited use of tumble dryer. I got rid of the outside flood lamps and fitted 9w bulkhead led's from Screwfix using separate pir sensors and a timer to knock them off at 11 pm. We live in a fairly modern 3 bed semi so well insulated. The thing that really bugs me is the standing charges; they're a rip off.

Getting gen 2 smart meters fitted on Friday this week. We're with Octopus energy after the demise of Avro. They seem to have good customer relations and the online account system is good. You can change the DD amount and payment date which is a first for me. Previous suppliers had control of that.

I am not trying to cut down on fuel usuage. Saying that you are cutting down implies that you were being wasteful before. I use the fuel I need to use.

I’m amazed if you can draw any conclusions from such a small sample with so many variables
