it looks like the gate is the wrong size and trellis has been used to pad out to the posts then the gate bodged on to the trellis :dunno:

I am not a chippy, what is wrong with the diagonal support being the wrong way round? and what is the wrong way round? (are you saying the top should be on the left, not the right as it is now?)

The diagonal brace should be on the bottom right side so that it prevents the gate from dropping. The hinge gives the support and the load pushes down onto that fixed point. The whole thing is a bodge, gates need hanging and slam posts, this will drop fairly quickly or the gate use will pull the trellis out.

If you imagine holding out your arm as if you were showing your biceps. You could support quite a lot of weight but if you pivot your forearm away from your body then the further it moves out the less you could support in weight. A gate support works in the same principle. I hope this makes sense?

i did notice the lanogaid was the wrong way round but as its a light gate square gate a problem in about 5 years time
i also notice the gap under the gate is far too small and the hinges are far to small but though they where too obvious

The brace might not be such an issue if the gate is constructed with tight mortice and tenon joints , it is quite light weight looking although I would personally have put the brace the other way round and probably added at least another pale to close up the gaps a bit as to me it looks too open.
I replaced a gate for a customer not long ago. The original was a ledged and braced affair with a rounded top. Customer was quite adamant that she didn't want the "diagonals" so I had to deepen the ledges as much as possible , glue and fix. I did point out that it may drop over time but she was seemingly unconcerned.
