I’ve had no end of problems with banks and building societies over the years! Is it any wonder that they are closing down so fast with the levels of incompetence and downright bad attitude of some of their employees?
Here are some of my experiences.

Britannia building society

About 30 years ago, there was £250K taken from my Britannia building society current account (I only had about £1k in there), the same day the £250k was paid back in. I just thought it was a mistake by the bank, until the next month when there was £650 taken from my account in interest. I walked into the bank and told them that £650 was taken from my account, they said “it’s because you went overdrawn by £250K for a few hours”. Obviously, I did not have an arranged overdraft, but I’m pretty sure that if I wrote a cheque for £250K, they would not honour that cheque! It took me weeks to get the £650 back!

Royal bank of Scotland (RBS)

Ten years after that I had a Buy to let mortgage with the RBS, I only owed about £6k on the mortgage and wanted to pay it off. I telephoned them and they told me to go into my local branch and they would give me a settlement figure. I walked into the nearest branch (Blackburn), gave them a statement and told them that I wanted to pay off the mortgage. They asked me how much I owed? I told them that I did not know, but would pay the amount in full, once they told me the amount. They did not know and made me phone another branch from within their branch, it was amazingly difficult to pay it off. At that point I realised that it would probably have been easier to rob the bank with a sawn-off shotgun, rather than paying off the mortgage!

Skipton building society

In the early 2000’s I bought an house in Southport, and got the mortgage through the Skipton building society. They were quite strict and had some criteria that needed to be fulfilled for the mortgage. They insisted on an electrical inspection, which meant that a local electrician was employed to find faults with the wiring in the property, so he did his best to make up a load of nonsense and issued a report. A DPC was required for the property, so I got a guy I knew to install an electro osmosis DPC and he issued the guarantee etc. I took this guarantee and other documents, such as proof that the electrical work had been completed and I gave them to the Skipton building society. When it came time for me to sell the property a few years later, they had lost all the certificates and guarantees (luckily, they did not lose the deeds!). They were not even apologetic about losing them and offered no apology or compensation!

Santander

Then a few years back I was buying something from a UK company that I have dealt with lots of times previously using my personal account, but this time I used my company account (Santander). For some strange reason the transaction did not complete. I phoned my bank and they said “we do not allow you to send money to that company” 😡 😡 😡 Obviously, I was livid! “You are telling me who I can and can’t send MY money to?”!

After giving the guy at the end of the phone a roasting, I thought I would open another business bank account, so I chose the Co-op. I telephoned them and spent 50 minutes on the phone, giving them all my personal and company details. The guy presses a button and says “your application has been rejected”, he did not know why, but said I would receive a letter through the post. I received the letter and it seems that Experian had flagged something up that stopped me from opening an account with the Co-op.

I phoned Experian, the woman on the phones asked if it was a personal reason, or business reason why I was denied the account, I told her that I did not know. A few minutes later she tells me that it’s a business reason and that I have to pay £99 to find out 😡 😡 😡 Obviously I was f*cking fuming at this point and asked the woman how they get away with running an extortion racket! I was so angry that I sent a letter to my local MP, who suggested that I join the FSB :wtf:

I used to write the odd cheque from my company bank account and the statement would arrive and it would say “duplicate cheque”, but the money was always deducted from my account. I didn’t really know what a “duplicate cheque” was! Obviously I know what duplicate means and what a cheque is, but could not understand why it kept appearing on my bank statements, until I wrote a cheque for a local Badger charity, which was bounced. It was returned to me with “duplicate” stamped all over it.
I started to look at the cheques and my old cheque book, and it turned out that all cheques in the new cheque book had the same cheque numbers as my old cheque book. I phoned up my bank and they didn’t seem to believe me. They even sent me a letter, basically asking me not to publish duplicate cheques- like I write the f*cking numbers on the cheques myself!
I walked into my local Santander branch in Darwen and showed them my cheque book and the old cheque book. They had absolutely zero interest, and just said “we don’t do business banking”, they did not even have the courtesy to look at the two cheque books and say something like” I’ve never seen anything like that before”, their only response was “I suggest you go to the post office”.

Nationwide
Then a couple of years back I received an invitation from the Nationwide for a low-rate personal unsecured loan, which was less than 2% interest, at the time I was paying 40% income tax, so borrowing money at 2%, then paying it off with money that you have paid less tax on in the following years makes perfect sense. I applied online and they needed proof of my earnings, I took one of the documents which proved my earnings to the branch in Blackburn and gave it to one of the employees to photocopy, they then tell me that the document I took was insufficient (even though it was listed on their website). Anyway, I was so annoyed with their incompetence, that I got the loan for a lower interest rate with First direct.

I’ve been with First direct for about 30 years and can honestly say that I don’t think I have ever had a problem with them at all!

Surely, it can't just be me that has these problems?

I did have a problem with Santander, can't remember all the reason, but short version they wouldn't do something for me, so I asked to close my account, which they did on the spot, the cheque the gave me I carried it next door to Lloyds who were happy to start a new account, never been to Santander since.

I believe you will find branches are closing down because most of the time folk do their banking "on line" so less people are needed, so if you have less people there is no point in having a branch, so in a way, yes it is annoying but in a way we only have our selves and the internet to blame.

First direct are good. I had a savings with them for a bit and at the time I think it was the only branch who when you phone them a human picks up straight away and directs your call none of this press 1 or 2 crap. Is it still like that?

i have had nothing but trouble with Santander, i dont have an account , but was dealing with my partner and when my mum died recently - terrible experience...

i have been with natwest since i started work on 1972 !!!!! - and i joined because that was the bank my dad used and a branch in the local village

They have always sorted any issues out - to be honest, i cant think when i had a problem with them ..... internet banking is easy and straightforward , and now i can photograph cheques and pay those in on my phone , no need to find a branch...
with the cost of fuel, nearest branch is 10miles away - 20mile @20p £4 plus parking which is expensive in the town - couple of quid i guess

Never had a problem with my 2 bank accounts, started with Lloyds back in about 1980 for personal banking . The only issue I've had was today when I had to pay in a cheque, nearest branch a 35 minute drive and £! to park. I should add that when Lloyds TSB split I was given a TSB account, despite being with Lloyds for x number of years, If I was still with Lloyds a 12 minute walk could have achieved the same result. until September when our local branch closes. The other account (business but they don't know that) is still with Lloyds...

I had a nice surprise from Lloyds. I have had my house and contents insurance policy with them for some years now, this letter says that they missed the fact that I am a Club Lloyds member ( no idea) and I was entitled to a 10% discount which had not been given. So they have sent me my back discount for £300. Great, I was none the wiser.

I’m not sure to be honest, I have never needed to telephone them for over a decade. They sent me out an electronic device which I used when logging onto online banking, now I have their App on my phone. I can do everything I need via their website or with the app 👍

I have done all my personal and business banking with Barclays, personal since 1966, and business since 1982. Not a single problem. I now have an additional personal account with HSBC, since 2012, and problems galore with the. What a shower!

Mortgages I always sourced with Halifax and no problems at all.

Now all my banking transactions are online and run smoothly.

I guess it is just the luck of the draw.

I think they did consistently get rated amongst best. I just stick with HSBC for personal and business

Banks are a pain the arse.

A long time ago when Internet banking was new I opened an account with halifax. Couldn't get logged in, went into branch, they could log me. Branch manager phoned head office, could help. I had 20k in the account, they couldn't access it, I couldn't access it, no one knew what to do, spent 3 hours in the branch trying to sort it. Eventually the only solution the manager could come up with was to write me a cheque from the branches own funds that I could pay into another account and he would sort it all out with head office later on. I took the cheque and opened an account with another bank.

Recently had trouble with Santander, they keep flagging fraud on transactions, they are transactions between my own accounts though. When it flags fraud it blocks all payments going out, they almost got a hefty fine from HMRC! Best bit is that their favourite time to flag fraud is at 8.10pm, their fraud line closes at 8pm.
No apology, no explanation.

Decided to switch to first direct, they give you £150 if you switch. Application easy but when it came to logging onto online banking, system didn't work, kept saying my passwords were wrong (they weren't). Eventually had to phone them up to get it sorted. So not a lot of faith in FD at the moment but we'll see. If they are crap I will take their £150 and then move to someone else.
Got an account with Virgin that I use as my backup account, their app is great and I have no issues, pretty good interest too.

Best advice I can give is build in redundancy, spread your money across different banks, a bit in each of them and definitely have more than 1 current account. If I only had my Santander account I would be looking at a big HMRC bill and no access to a lot of my money.

Yeah, I forgot to mention this in my original post. Part of the problem with the Santander, is that if my card is used three or more times per day, they suspect fraud and put a block on the account, you then get an automated message asking if you recognise the following transactions. It’s only when you get to the computer and look at the account that you realise that two of the three transactions are monthly reoccurring transactions 😡 😡
That really used to annoy the hell out of me, but thankfully it has not happened for some years. Ironically I never opened an account with Santander, it was Abbey National business, who were then taken over by Santander!

i bank with barclays.

there used to be a branch at the nook where i live in south shields. litterally i walk out my house... turn left walk across the road and barclays was there on the corner.... now its the old bank pizza co.... :cussing:

south shields barclays hasnt had any kind of facelift for years. it looks really really dated. i had to go there a few weeks back after being paid by cheque for a job id done. their app only allows sub £1k cheques to be put in that way.

the barclays app is absolutely fcking shirt. a few years back i could my self create online accounts. now i can not. and i could rename accounts.... now that is also impossible. bunch of pricks
