Advice on cutting porcelain tiles

Post by MoTurtle »

Hello, I have porcelain floor tiles 600 x 300 x 9mm. I need to do a long cut to get 600 x 180 strips. I only have a Rubi TS40.

1)What is best way/tool to get nice clean cut? If a manual tile cutter, what is a good model, but not super-expensive as I only do this size rarely? Or is electric cutter best.
2)Also, the tiles mention sealing, although the person in Wickes said tilers rarely seal. Is it always best to seal, and do this before or after grout?

Thanks!

:welcomeuhm: I am no tiler, 1) but I have a hand held electric cutter, similar to Makita M0401 and I would try with that, however a clamped guide would be needed and the space under the motor is slim. Bosch GDC 120 is similar; not many UK suppliers, got my machine whilst abroad.
2) Have not done this ever but I would presume after grout because otherwise the grout might not adhere to the tile sides and base adhesive.

A cheap wet cutter such as https://www.toolstation.com/qep-diamond ... lsrc=aw.ds

You'll only need to seal the tiles if they are unglazed, if so then carefully seal before grouting, taking care not to get the sealant down the edge of the tile. May need a second coat after grouting.

They can be a pain , just tiled a shower room , used my Big Clinker cutter for long cuts , easy , and diamond blade in a small angle grinder, and a pair of nibbling pliers, only messed up two cuts , one tile messed up did resolve another problem

:dunno: wine~o, the Op wants 60 x 18cm strips, he'd need to use the extension the table comes with to support the 60x30cm; I have a similar table but no extension and have never run such a long tile and he will only get one strip piece out of each tile! Worth a try if he has spare tiles and not expensive as the table is reasonable and useful for smaller work, corner and wall socket cuts. I think this review was good advice, I used to clamp mine to the work horse but that would even tip, I would put down a plastic sheet for the spray and be careful not to slip:-
{ Bought a separate disk for porcelain tiles and this worked well.Table is not big enough to handle large tiles, so needed to make a wider support.Also had to put a back stop to stop the table moving. As others suggest watch out for the spray! Laying 600 x 600 and 600 x 300 tiles in kitchen and utility - so far so good.}
