Gregorian chant
If I'm honest I'm not sure this belongs in the music section but I suppose it has a sort of tune even if there's not any actual music.
A friend of mine has recently moved house and a few things were left behind. One thing was a four box set of Gregorian chant and he's given it to me , probably because I do medieval re-enactment or as he puts it "you like all that medieval crap". I have listened to two of the four cds so close to 2 3\4 hours of chant. Actually a bit more than that as the first cd started to repeat and I didn't quite notice. To say it is repetitive is a bit of an understatement . Obviously sung in latin so not something to join in with , it would probably sound good playing in the background wandering around a dusty old church or monastery but not really something I'd see anyone listening to for pleasure.
That said the recordings are interesting in regards to what else is in the background. On numerous occasions I've heard coughing and shuffling around , what sounded like a sneeze at one point and on one track it sounded like someone doing the cleaning and sweeping during the recording. Not quite sure of the target audience if I'm honest.

I resisted the obvious comment that it was god awful. To be honest it's very monotone and despite it's just the human voice unless you are fluent in latin there's no lyrics as such to listen to. It kind of just washes over you. Both my missus and daughter barely managed a minute or two...

That sort of thing reminds me of the hymn (Sir John Tavener's "Song for Athene") that was sung as they carried Princess Diana's coffin out of Westminster Abbey. It was very moving, with the steps of the pallbearers only other audible thing.
