It all turned out ok in the end!

Post by Argyll »

I woke up this morning to my fridge freezer making a weird noise like a compressor only quieter (maybe about 40dcb). The stuff in the freezer was only half frozen so I thought the fridge freezer must have packed up.

I've been on online all day to Currys Argos and AO but all the fridges I want are out of stock. I decided to drive into Falkirk and look at Currys store. Again everything I wanted was out of stock. The only ones in stock were the big American-style ones which were far too big. I was losing the rag so left the store and headed home.

Out walking the dogs about 40 minutes ago and found out there had been a power cut through the night. The power was on in some houses and out in others. My parents' power was out but two doors down weren't which I found weird.

I thought surely it was too much of a coincidence so popped home and switched the fridge freezer back on and it seems to be okay. I could have binned a perfectly good fridge.

It still doesn't explain why it made the weird noise though. Could these have been something that wouldn't start up again after the power came back on?

you will get different houses on different fazes so could be every third house or 4 then 4 then four or any combination quite random

noise could be to do with the thawing and refreezing cycle :dunno:

most houses are on 1 phase and we distribute 3 phases , so often different streets may be on different phases and depending on what happened its not unusual to see that type of issue
also a friend of mine lives in a private road and she has a standby generator as does one or 2 other houses as 20years ago -they had a lot of power outages -

My Samsung makes some funny noises but works fine. Still under warranty so I don't worry about it.

Had a crappy beko fridge in the last place that worked fine but made a racket during the defrost cycle. You could hear it everywhere in the house, drove me mad.

Needless to say I sold the house with the fridge included, replaced it with an LG - whisper quiet. Love that thing. Even if I did end up needing to remove a brick flue 2 days after moving in to fit it in the kitchen.
