grouting or silicone

Post by finest1 »

hi all

im finishing off a repair in my shower tray. where the tiles meet the shower tray, some have advised not to use grout, but use water resistant silicone. i'm really hung up with trying my best to reduce any sort of leaking. what is the best practice out there with your experience

thanks

The majority of tray leaks are caused by tray movement and it is important to get that right first. The old style acrylic trays were notorious for breaking the wall to tray seal but in recent years the more popular resin type trays are far more rigid and cause fewer problems. I have always used a bead of sanitary caulk between tray and wall tiles as grouting will only crack with the slightest movement. A good idea is to have someone stand in the tray as you lay the bead as it will help with any potential minor stretch when the shower is in use. A lot of trays have upstands that help with this joint.

thanks for your swift reply. "Sanitary caulk" you mean "sanitary silicone?" my shower tray is 2 years old and feels light. what i mean, is that its not some heavy ceramic one from days of old!, however, great idea with getting someone to stand in teh shower while i apply silicone
