Pressure Test-Is it necessary?

Post by Argyll »

My Potterton Boiler developed a leak last week. I got my head right under the boiler and could see it was dripping from the top of the condense pipe right up the top of the internal boiler. There was a big flange and there was brown liquid stuff leaking from it.

The engineer from City Technical Services Glasgow visited today. He said it was coming from the heat exchanger because it was brown and sticky. If it were the condense pipe it would be clear. He said he'd need to book it in for a pressure test. I asked why this was necessary as we both could see where the leak was coming from and my floor is soaking. He agreed with me but said it was policy just in case the leak was coming from somewhere else in the system. I explained, "but we can both see where the leak is coming from". He agreed again but said he was just following policy.

So I need to switch off my boiler on Tuesday night for them to visit on Wednesday morning and leave it on a pressure test for what could be 48hrs which I feel is unnecessary.

I feel as if I'm being dicked around.

What else can you do?
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

 If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

That is obviously the top of the boiler and that is an automatic air vent I should have thought that was the cause of the pooling. ( cost of vent about £12).

Yeah you're right Aero. It was the AAV as I found out today. How on earth the engineer on Monday didn't know is beyond me! Took them three hours today with two engineers.

Anyway, they messed up my settings. I have my HW to 42 degrees. What should my heating setting be on at the boiler?
