Dewalt 54v brush cutter
I purchased the brush cutter to clear local footpaths....which it does a decent job of doing. The 3 arm blade that came with it is ok, but I would like a shredder blade/mulching blade instead. I bought a 2 arm Oregon mulching blade, which worked fantastic...but it's a bit too big and drained the batteries very quickly. I noticed online that I can get hold of a Stihl shredder blade with the turned down tips that is 270mm instead of the Oregon 310mm....problem is, the centre hole is 20mm instead of what the Dewalt blade uses which is 25mm. I might call a place online and see if they would drill out the centre to 25mm, although they haven't responded to a message sent to them a couple of weeks ago. I can't drill it bigger myself unless I use a Dremel and grind away at it until I get the right sized opening.....I'm not exactly the best handyman the world has ever seen....so that may or may not work. Anybody know of any other options? I guess I could buy the blade and find someone local who could enlarge the whole more accurately than I can.

The Oregon mulching blade is terrific after a long pathway of trial and error I have a combination that destroys blackberries into a mulch. I started out with a petrol Einhell brush cutter and tried the saw-type blade it came with which was a bit pants. I got an Oregon two blade cutter and that worked really well for five minutes when the end snapped off the alloy shaft, obviously the alloy fatigued out with the weight vibration and destructive power. After research, I bought a heavy-duty Hyundai brush cutter with a steel shaft. This has worked flawlessly and with the three bladed Orgeon it is a beast. Part of the reason the Oregon works so well is the weight and speed so a lighter blade might not necessarily work as well. So firstly be warned about the potential issues I suffered using the Oregon. To get the 25mm hole buy a cheap step drill bit on eBay for around £7. These are conical in shape and gradually open the hole up to the 25mm you need. The only issue might be if the blade is hardened. The step drill bit will fit an ordinary drill and I am sure it would be within your capabilities to cut the hole you need.

Thanks. I had thought about a petrol cutter, but so far I'm ok with the battery power with the Dewalt.....although for almost £500 (with extra battery)....I could have gone petrol. I do like the somewhat quieter+simpler operation. The Oregon mulcher was great going through berry vines.....it was just a bit much for the battery powered motor....and I was getting some pretty hard vibration as well. The 3 arm Dewalt blade does a decent job, just not as quick as the Oregon did. Part of it I thought was the length/weight, but also just the added cutting edge of the turned down tips. I am hoping the 40mm shorter blade length (about the size of the Dewalt blade) will give me at least a little bit better cutting power than the flat 3 arm Dewalt blade. Not overly thrilled with the strimmer line system either and think I might replace it with the replacement cap that you can just wind up the line without taking anything off.

Have you seen the wire-type cutting heads which might suit your machine better as they are much lighter and do not generate the loading and are better suited to battery units. Do an Ebay search with 'Outdoor Tool Brushcutter Wire Weed Blade 3 or 6-Cutter Grass Trimmer Head' for only £8.

I've seen the ones with lots of wire ends, not sure how they would work on the stuff I cut.....anything from thick grass to thick patches of berry vines. Ideally, I just want one blade that can do both grass and the tougher berry vine stuff without having to change things.....and I think the mulching style of blades will work better than the straight blade. Come the Spring I'll be cutting back the berry vine patches a little further and also keep the grass off the main footpaths....a do-all blade for grass and thicker stuff is what I need. Dewalt was offering a free battery if you bought certain "kits".....they are sending me another free battery so I should have enough power to cut for almost 2 hrs at a time.
