Hi,
Sorry for the late reply ericmark; I need to activate notifications if I can find where to do this.
It's certainly been cold enough for penguins here in West Yorkshire over the last few weeks.
Thanks for the compliment; it's surprising what can be bought cheaply these days mostly made in China and often the quality is good. Kids these days think 40 is old so you'll soon be joining the dinosaur gang; it's a good place to be but the days aren't long enough to do everything; I don't know how I coped when I had a full time job; things seem to take forever to do now.
Of course your 50 year old axe is the same just like Triggers brush and Trigger even received a certificate conforming it was the same brush it only having had 18 handles and 28 heads? What a shame about the paint bubbling on the bench you painted; I completely stripped our garden bench with cast iron ends and repainted but I used expensive Benjamin Moor Aura exterior satin paint which I used to paint the bungalow exterior but in green;
This is the bench; BM paint on the wood oil based gloss I had to hand on the metal; it came up a treat.
Here's one of two identical huts I made both painted in the same green; 3 coats of paint on each the paint at around £100 per US gallon a US gallon is quite a bit smaller than our Imperial gallon; I was fed up of applying preservative which washed off with the next downpour; expensive but I can forget the job for many years hence cheap long term.
It must be very interesting working with the trains but how sad our loco industry has been in free fall for many years; as a school kid I and my chums used to travel from Wakefield to Doncaster "The plant" on Saturday mornings where many of these old locos were built; we'd climb over the wall and wander around outside and in the huge sheds; we've been on Mallard footplate whilst engineers were working on the boiler front they not having a clue they had company; we were often pulled by Mallard and the A4 locos sticking our head out of the carriage window to smell the smoke; happy days but upsetting even at our age to see locos being scrapped with piles of cast iron nameplates in the yard.
I've not heard of a Stanley Steamer for years but as a child such things were common; thanks yes our coach lamps would look the part in correct colour on one of these steamers and possibly be the right age.
Kind regards, Colin.
