Cheap but ok "natural bristle" paint brush for Zinsser BIN (shellac) primer

Post by DaveyH »

Where to buy a cheapish ok quality 1" or 2" natural bristle paint brush to use for Zinsser BIN (or any other shellac primer)?

I keep reading on various forums that you want a brush with natural bristles because the chemicals in shellac paint destroy synthetic paint brushes, however 95% brushes I look at online are synthetic. The only natural bristle brushes I've found seem to be expensive makes like the Wooster, Fat Hogg, Purdys etc that a DIY'er would probably only use for a top coat.

To add even more confusion the manufacturers instructions say to use either. Here is a quote from the Zinsser BIN data sheet.

"Apply with a natural or synthetic (nylon, polyester or blend) bristle brush"

What brushes are you guys using with your shellac primers?

Thanks

Toolstation did a 'Painter's Dozen' for around £15 I seem to remember.

Harris Eclipse was a reasonably priced bristle brush, but leave the bristles in water overnight, as they can be prone to shedding. They have guts, though.
Hamilton should still do the Perfection range, but they're perhaps not as cheap as you'd like. Ultra cheap brushes will have you tearing your hair out. There is a price point, that if you go under, you'll have nothing but grief.

I know what you mean, I've bought some of those screwfix/toolstation "use and throw brushes" a few years ago. They're total rubbish, there's hardly any bristles in them to start with and they constantly shed.

Are natural bristle brushes better for Zinsser BIN or is the manufacturers datasheet correct you can use either natural or synthetic?
