Silk over silk (ceilings)

Hi, first visit to the forums for a long time, been busy busy but good to see a lot of old names I recognise still here

Anyway down to business and hopefully a nice easy question. I’m possibly over thinking this but then thought why not ask on the forum so here you go…

Customer has white silk on her ceilings and wants the same again. From memory I’ve only ever done ceilings in silk just once and that was over matt paint.

Obviously you can have cracking problems going matt over silk, but what about silk over silk? Anything I should be aware of? Give it a coat of Gardz first or is that unnecessary?

For reference the paint I’ll be using is Macpherson Vinyl Silk.

Sometimes the roller can skid on a silk finish and in the past I have rubbed over with a used scotch pad and water with a dash of detergent. It keys the sheen slightly so you may want to fall back on this method if it proves to be a problem.

Cheers guys, I’m starting the job tomorrow so will go steady away with a short pile roller and see how I get on.

Quick update as promised…

Just went ahead and banged it on as per spottie’s advice

Used a short pile roller and did get a bit of skid just as DWD predicted but just eased off the pressure a bit and ensured that I didn’t overload the roller with paint.

Turns out there was nothing to worry about, job is looking great so far, customer is really pleasant so happy days!

Glad I asked on here; thanks for the replies you set my mind at rest.

Getting on well with the customer and she’s very happy with the job so the scope of work has now been increased to another couple of rooms

Just thought I’d give a thumbs up to the MacPherson Vinyl Silk paint, it’s the first time I’ve used it and I’ve found it great to work with for both brushing and rollering. MP Eclipse has been my go to white matt for ceilings for a long time and I’m happy to recommend the vinyl silk to anyone that hasn’t tried it yet.
