Anyone know anything about websites?
I've been dealing with a company down south for a good few years. Today I couldn't find their website. When I called them they said they lost their IP address so their website was down. They explained the chap who ran their website died quite suddenly hence why they lost their website.
I've no idea how these things work but I'd have thought the site would continue to run whether the guy died or not.
I hope I'm wrong but I'm thinking maybe they're run into financial difficulties or something happening that they aren't telling me.
I spend quite a lot of money with these guys so I need to be cautious.

If you don't touch a website, but do pay for it (as opposed to a free website) then I see no reason why it should vanish. That said, a few years ago my website did vanish (Permanently) as the company hosting the website went bust.
It could be that they do not host their website, but pay A.N.Other to host it, and the renewal fee came up, and as the IT bloke is dead, he did not respond to the email to renew the site so the hosts pulled the plug on it. Or the host computer may have been unplugged by the cleaner to plug in the vacuum cleaner.
Either way, as its not your website there is nothing you can do, apart from twiddle your thumbs and see what happens. You could also google the company.
I wouldn't worry, but try it again in a few days.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.
If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

I think you may have misunderstood me mate. I was only concerned about buying stuff and it never arrives because the company has gone bust.Someone-Else wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 8:45 pm If you don't touch a website, but do pay for it (as opposed to a free website) then I see no reason why it should vanish. What you say though makes sense but I'll still apply caution. I did check them on Companies House but they haven't filed accounts for this 22-23 yet. I'll wait until they do.

No. I figured you were meaning buying stuff, as you did say you spend a lot of money with them. I suggested their site may be down as the IT bloke is dead, so could not renew the site.

I contributed info and stories to a Forum for some years; it had been around for many more, but the bloke who ran it wrapped himself into a tree one night riding his moto home, he did not leave the password with anyone and all were locked out when the payment expired.

When you checked the company records was there an address for the Directors under the 'people' bit? You could try contacting them and see what the score is.

Nah I don't want to do that mate in case the others get wind. From what others say though it seems legit so I'll leave it be.dewaltdisney wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 8:37 am When you checked the company records was there an address for the Directors under the 'people' bit? When you pay for a website you pay for the name (url) aka domain, you then pay for hosting monthly or yearly - if you don't pay your bills you get cut off in this case the site developer/manger died, bank accounts get frozen, bills don't get paid
I wound think they are doing orders over the phone
