They think it's all over, it is now. Never let an idiot use a multimeter as I have just blown it up. I think I touched the wrong thing with the probes and there was a phutt and a flash and I realised I killed it. In my ignorance, I was looking for continuity up the pathway of the incoming +/- wires. Probably not sensible. I will buy a cheap jigsaw at some point as I really do not use it that often. RIP

You don't check continuity with power on! You check for voltage which is still risky on mains supply.
Should have thought the 3 pin plug fuse would have taken care of any major damage happening.

Yes, the breaker on the main board did not jump. In fairness Aero I had no idea what I was doing, stupid really. Anyway, it has had it now, the decision has been made for scrap.
I really should learn more about how to use a multimeter, I haven't a clue.

Multi meters are useful......................with electronics, since you need to know "what value is that resistor that has paint on it" (Resistors have coloured bands, the coloured bands are numbers, with these you can look and know the value of a resistor) There is a bit more to it than that............but cheap multimeters are dangerous with mains as the leads are often too thin, and when the fuse fails cheap meters have been known to explode (They have little or no protection surrounding the fuse, and a thin case which is easily punctured)
Most who have a multimeter often use the "beep" facility, so why buy a multimeter ?
May I suggest you buy one of these Click me better and safer than a multimeter (and yes it has the beep function too) and should you put it on the mains when you shouldn't it will not go phut or bang it will change tone and indicate what the voltage is.
No settings to change, it can test switches, sockets and almost anything else (Except electronics)

Above are my opinions Below is my signature.
Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.
If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

That looks like a great tool to have SE, I am tempted. However, I think on reflection I should not try to mess with electronics anymore, I really do not understand the circuits enough to act responsibly or safely. Best get someone who knows what they are doing I guess. By this token, the saw would still have ended up in the bin.
