Bathroom Led Mirror with demister & Bluetooth Speakers

Post by Natterjack »

Hi,
I have a new Led Mirror with demister & Bluetooth Speakers to be installed above the sink (zone 2) in the bathroom. There is an existing light / shaver socket (with integrated pull switch) above the sink at the moment on the lighting circuit. The consumer unit has a 30mA RCD & a 10A breaker on the lighting circuit.
Can the new mirror be wired directly into the lighting circuit using the existing setup, or is there a need for anything additional, e.g. a fused connection unit?
The existing light fitting was plastic and not earthed, but the new mirror will be connected to earth.
I have attached photos of the existing light / shaver socket, the wires exposed once remove & the new mirror.
The light / shaver socket (1st photo) is being removed to be replaced by the round mirror (see last attachment)
Many thanks for any advice.

There is no reason why is should not be feed from the existing supply if manufacturer says it is suitable for bathroom use, but the existing wiring does not comply, the inner cores should not be exposed outside of the fitting, what you have now is a bit of a lash up and would not comply.

Not sure if agree with the above.

If the new fitting is going in the same place as the old fitting, the the outer sheath is sufficient ...........

And OP - there are NO ZONES related to bathroom basins / sinks

Thanks, I don't particularly like the way the light was originally wired with terminal block just stuffed through the hole in the plasterboard but I suppose standards were different 25 years ago. I would prefer to have the connection in a junction box fixed to the stud behind an access panel in the plasterboard. The mirror is large enough to hide that away.
One other question - it has been pointed out to me that there is the double isolated symbol on the back of the mirror yet there is also an earth wire connection. should this be a cause for concern ?
I have attached photos of the back of the mirror.

Thanks, the fitting is going in the same place, but think I would prefer to have the connection in a junction box fixed to the stud behind an access panel in the plasterboard - I'd rather be over cautious in a bathroom.
I take your point about zones - I read that it is 'good practice' to consider the area above a sink as zone 2 - it is however just within 600mm of the bathtub which I believe is zone 2 anyway.
What are your thoughts about the double insulated symbol on the back of the mirror and the inclusion of an earth wire - see my post above.

I would offer some caution about this product. It’s got the class 2 symbol, yet has an earth connection - this doesn’t add up

Thanks, it doesn't make sense to me. Either it is incorrectly marked as class 2 and does need earthing, or if it is class 2 then it shouldn't be earthed - so why the earth wire? I think I'm going to return it.

Only out of interest for further comments: The connector block, even without an earth would not be class 2 especially as it sits next to the, I presume, metal back mounting plate!
With a valid earth it becomes an acceptable Class 1, I could guess that aside from the non DI connector block, the provision of an earth does away with the need for a termination of the house earth.
As it is not a ceiling light your caution is well founded.
And, surprisingly, I could not find in recent regulations for the 60cm radius around a basin to the floor, only a recommendation to treat as zone 2.

Thanks, there seems to be a consensus here, I'm not taking any chances with a potentially dodgy appliance, especially in the bathroom - It's going back.
