Help!

Post by A83XO »

Hi I'm wondering if anyone knows what type of material this is on the front of my kitchen cupboards?
I'm hoping to either paint it or put something over it to do a bit of a revamp ☺️

It is a plastic foil stuck on when they were made. You can paint over but firstly have a read of my link below, BIN will do the job on platics. Claean well first with meths.

just be aware the chipboard core you can see at the corner will probably show as is but coloured
it may help by priming and rubbing down several times to gradually fill in the grain to get a smooth less visible finnish wether it will work or not i dont know :dunno:

Use car body filler to get the broken areas level and tidy. If you want the grain effect, which I think will look better, mimic the surface in the filler.

I agree with DWD about leveling up the doors first, you could also use other 2 part fillers such as exterior wood fillers but do make sure it's a 2 part filler such as this like car body filler.
Other fillers are not likely to leave you a good, hard, enough substrate for whatever you want to do on top.

If you really want it not to show you'd probably have to do two or three rounds of filler and sanding, possibly priming in between.

Another option to painting them would be something like a vinyl wrap which come in dozens and dozens of different colours and patterns. If doing that one fill and sand should be enough then just make sure the doors are very clean and be as precise as you can when cutting the vinyl.

Good luck, Tony

Actually, that is a good idea. Colour wraps are a good way to achieve a modern look without the faff of painting. However, you will have to be careful to get the substrate well prepared as any irregularity in the surface could show through the wrap like Madonna's nipples. I found this which might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxdlz7VLtuA I think I would be reaching for the BIN on reflection
