Cabinet making - best sheet material

Hi

I'm making a kitchen island so obviously the carcass will be exposed, does anyone have any suggestions as to the best/nicest sheet material for the job?

I would like to just oil the wood or leave it pretty much untreated so I was going to perhaps use one sided oak veneered ply.

Is there any solid wood sheet material that would be up to the job though? I was thinking around 18mm thick (but I can only find veneered ply up to 12mm) so that I can comfortably use connecting screws.

Any suggestions would be great.

Of the shelf oak veneered MDF is available the thickness from 7mm to 26mm, that is 6mm + 1mm 9 + 1, 12 + 1 veneer etc. I never us veneered ply due to it only being veneered on one face where as MDF is veneered on both faces. But you will still need to lip the edges either using iron edging or solid lippings.

You can consider using Oak Panel Full Strip as a professional cabinet maker It’s what I use.
