overkill is a good thing in this instance the cost is very little it also allows you to support items from the struts like elevated pipes or swings/seesaw bedrooms what ever you fancy underneath on wire or nibble proof material

on a further note to screw ply to ply drill a 3 or 3.17mm[1/8 inch pilot ]hole through the surface and 40mm into the back right angle board so 55mm deep use no6x 2" screws and dont overtighten
or metric 3.5mm pilot hole 3.5mm screw minimum length 40mm preferably 50mm and again dont overtighten
if you have a solo g clamp you that you can get sometimes from lidl or any time from toolstation the place the clamp jaws in the area to be drilled on the back bit where the 40mm hole will be drilled to help stop the board delaminating

Help with DIY double hamster cage
Thank you so much, that is very useful! We bought the screws prior to your answer and we bought 4mm diameter and 40mm length screws.
I was also looking online and found a cheaper alternative to the 3mm glass which is 5mm acrylic. Acrylic is lighter than glass and resistant so I'm happy with that: https://www.simplyplastics.com/catalog/ ... hwQAvD_BwE

excellent, a much safer option
remember any corner off any material the can get in there mouth will be nibbled so plan it to be easily replaced or protected with metal

We actually built this cage and it looks very nice! It was very hard to make but it's standing strong and housing an hamster each.
Thought I would share the end result!
