Installing EV charger

Post by Riffraff »

Hi everybody. My electrical supplier is coming to do some upgrade work in preparation for installing a 7kw EV charger in my garage.
My electrician informed me we need to run an upgraded cable to there which will involve digging up about 25m of my recently renovated chips and monobloc driveway.
I want to suggest running the cable up through the loft and out through the soffit across a 85cm gap(see photo) straight through the garage wall, this would be just under 3m off the ground so can anyone tell me if this would be allowed?
The existing supply for the garage lights and sockets come up through the concrete floor and isn't accessible from the house.

Many thanks

I am looking forward to the reasons why not!
Plenty of houses in my area have their domestic supply from a post in the road to their roof line about the eaves, in fact power cables pass over a set of retirement bungalows too.
But Riffraff please get your pictures right way up, there is a Preview button to check your post.

What does your electrician say? after all, it will be his name on the certificate. Have you considered a "mole" Its a pneumatic device that tunnels from one point to another in a few minutes.

This is an example of one.
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

 If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

Installing EV charger

Installing an EV charging point involves a lot of consideration. The use of TN-C-S (PME) supplies has caused huge problems with EV charging, and safely, charging an EV in a garage is easy, but outside is another matter.

To fit EV charging points electricians need to be specially trained, there are many ways to protect against a broken PEN, how much of what you are asking about is down to personal preference of the electrician, and how much because there is some other unknown to us problem I don't know.

But as an electrical engineer with 50 years plus experience I can't installing my own EV charging point.

Using a mole can have terrible consequences if it hits a service such as the gas, electric, water, phone or waste water
