I have a kitchen fitter who I don’t have much faith in. I understand unexpected things happen, but I have noticed several mistakes and a general lack of precision.

The project is wrapping up soon, but the top of the dresser and the top of the units are not aligned and he’s told me there is nothing he can do and it doesn’t sit right with me. The difference is small, but I’m going to have a cornice and it will make the disparity very apparent. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remedy it?

I'm no expert in any means shape or form (and others that come along will probably be able to put my thoughts right)
I don't know if there is a reason why the units cannot be / were not moved up a little to be in line with the dresses, as said I'm no expert but I would have thought a laser line would have ensured that did not happen. Chances are your walls are out so in order for the units to be level there would be a difference in gap between the ceiling and top of the units from one end to the other no matter what, it's just they way it's been done it's more noticeable.

but I think the un even vertical gap between the units and the dresser (caused by the bottom of the unit being flush with the box section and the top of the units being proud of the box section) would send my ocd into overdrive and much more noticeable as it's at eye level.

did you tell him it was crucial that the units line up exactly ??
as they are visually very different and no where a cornice can jump naturally from one to the other not sure what the actual problem is ??
what colour cornice are you thinking off that will suit both black and brown or is it just on the black unit if so you will not notice as the cornice will tower above

do you have a tower unit in the black section ??
are both the black and brown from the same manufacturer ??

I didn’t tell him that it was necessary for the units to line up at the start of the job - I thought that would be a given, but maybe I am mistaken.

I have informed him now that it is necessary, because otherwise the cornice will not be aligned and I personally think the misalignment is visually unappealing. Yes the cornice will go on both units.

Yes everything is from the same manufacturer.

The misalignment can be corrected by raising the wall hung cabinets. Check if there is an adjustment capability. Some have it for levelling, whether there is enough is another question.

how big is the actual difference looks about 6mm but the angle may be deceptive ??
do you have a tower unit in the run as this will dictate the height ??
he wont want to level the top as the tile line underneath is 10 times more likely to annoy you
lines below eye height are 10 times more important than above
is the coving identical profile and size on both units ??

It’s about 1cm difference. There is no tower unit, but I would like everything aligned with the dresser unit.

Good point. If he has to re-tile then he has to re-tile imo.

Yes, coving is the same size on both units.

As an alternative he could take 6mm off the base of the hutch cabinet to level it.

No, the fitter did it. There was no suggestion for an alternative.
