Valspar problems, advice on new paint
Hi,
We wanted to repaint our bathroom a different colour, went into B&Q to choose a colour and after asking the staff on the paint counter what they would recommend they told us the best bathroom paint they have is Valspar Premium Bathroom and Kitchen, was told it had excellent moisure resistance and was scrubbable, so we had it colour mixed and bought it.
Cleaned the bathroom walls, let them dry and did a single undercoat with Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt in white, let that dry for a week and then did two coats of the Valspar, it went on really well and we were pleased with the colour, left it 10 days. Used the shower and the next day we noticed long water marks all around the walls, the marks streaked down and turned the paint shiny. Tried to scrub it a bit and noticed the paint was slightly coming off on the cloth and the marks were not shifting. Looked on the Internet and found other people leaving poor reviews with the exact same problems, wish I had read them first.
Anyway after a long battle with the manager and Valspar rep at B&Q who denied ever having problems with the paint despite me showing them the reviews and a video of my bathroom they finally agreed to refund me. They tried to blame me for not leaving it long enough despite the can saying leave it for a week (I left it for 10 days) and also trying to convince me it had a reaction with the paint underneath despite the can saying it is fine to paint over matt paint.
Question now is what paint do I use instead, I think we previously had Dulux Diamond Matt which never had a problem with water stains, is this still good? Can I now go straight over the Valspar or is it best to undercoat it with something now it has the water stains on it? It would be a nightmare if the water stains showed through when I paint over.
Thanks.

I would sand the walls, wipe clean and apply 2 coats Dulux easy care bathroom soft sheen paint. You may ask Dulux product advise first on 0333 222 7171

The first thing that concerned me is using BnQ, the paint is always poor. It is best to use trade centres like Johnstones. Johnstones Coverplus is very good although there are others equally good. Johnstones can mix any colour up too. It is a shame you did not leave the Crown as the finish. I am not sure what Valspar has in it and you need to take care that it does not react with a coverover so a test patch might be a good idea.

Thanks for the advice, is the idea to just give it a light sand to provide a key for the new paint?

Yes, stupidly I went to B&Q instead of a trade centre, won't make that mistake again. I've just been to Brewers Decorator Centre, and they recommended a light sand of the old paint and to use either Dulux Trade Diamond Matt or Eggshell Diamond Matt, I think I'm tempted to use Diamond Matt as I believe that was on there before we used the Valspar and we didn't have issues, unless people have had negative experiences with the Diamond Matt? They also said if I came back with the Valspar colour swatch, they should be able to match it.dewaltdisney wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 10:25 am The first thing that concerned me is using BnQ, the paint is always poor. Yes get rid of any sheen have nice clean key surface to apply new paint, 120-150 grit will do, it's messy but for best result. I wipe with wet cloth after sanding wait to dry and then apply paint.

I used Dulux Trade Dianond Eggshell on several sliding hard board wardrobe doors and on a warm day had to work quick with roller and brush, the finish is a fine orange peel brilliant white, but they are now 8yrs old, having said that only me in house.
