pipe to soakaway - how much soil cover needed

Post by hiace_drifter »

I have a pipe from the downpipe on my garage to a soakaway in the middle of my garden. The soakaway is under 30cm of gravel/soil, so that end of the pipe is also covered by 30cm of soil. However at the garage end the pipe is only under about 3 inches of soil. Is that enough for light foot traffic?

Is that a walk way or a flower bed?

It will be a very occasionally used walkway up to the side of the garage to the water butts, used about once a week at most. The weeds have taken over!

Yep - it is on the list for the electrician to rectify. The original electrician used non armoured cable, not buried. I'm switching to a different electrician for other reasons.

Cover with one of these (cheaper if you shop around) bed into the soil over the pipe and the load of walking over will be distributed. https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Ground- ... m/p/236266 Grass grows through to disguise.

Thanks, so with one of those 3-4 inches soil should be ok? That's the shallowest and it increases to 12 inches over a length of 6m or so.

Yes, people park cars on these, and your weight will never come close to causing a depression in the soil.

Super thanks. I had been looking at these for a path across the lawn, so will use them where the pipe is close to surface too.
