Removing sticky tape under wheel arch trim

Post by spr0ut »

My wife has a Seat Arona and the rear wheel arch trim came off. I have a new one but assume I need to fully remove the old black adhesive tape that was holding the original one on. I've just spent a bit of my lunch break with a hair dryer and plastic scrapper but it's very slow work. Is there a better way to safely remove it without damaging the paint much (obviously the paint will be covered so some minor scratches is fine)

The motor trade use a rubber eraser wheel in a drill. You have to run the drill on a slow speed and it will pull the tape off with careful passes. See https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295329162793 ... 260d56216d

Would one option be a adhesive remover like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/EVO-STIK-Adhes ... 87&sr=8-15

I am not sure, I know the trade use the eraser wheels. Here is a video to get an idea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sigoYzG2k8 Check eraser wheels on Amazon.

Try WD40. It won't harm the paint but may soften the adhesive.

I'd also recommend some sort of solvent.
Different solvents work better depending on what the tape was made of.
Definately start with WD40 also try brake clean / carb clean / tar spot remover / celulose thinner, which ever you've got and methylated spirits / IPA and acetone. You will need at least one of these solvents anyway to remove the WD40 and any traces of oil / grease / polish before sticking the new one on.
