Boxes near window - are they safe to remove?

Post by ALK »

Hi everyone.

I've just moved into a new house and near some of the windows are these boxes. I'd like to remove them, but wanted some opinions on whether it would be safe to do so, and/or what the purpose of the boxes might be.
Does anybody have any thoughts?

Box 1 - slightly bigger than a matchbox and has a wire that seems to be going outside:

Box 2 - standard phone socket size, no obvious wires, but presumably some going into the wall:

Appreciate any thoughts on whether they're okay to remove and something I can do myself.

Box 1 is a standard junction box used by telecoms companies (The cable probably goes to a telegraph pole)

Box 2 is where you (used to) plug a telephone into. (Look at the box adjacent, it clearly says NTL, they were a cable company, now taken over by virgin media)
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Box 1, I have a few of them around rooms in my house, the previous owner had them as standard telephone extensions; slightly bigger than a matchbox (excluding extra long matches)not sure if they could be master socket from the telephone Co as S-E seems to suggest.
Either way they would be low voltage about 50vdc.

It is safe to remove them but whether you should or not depends on what telecoms you have.
