Snapped car key

Post by Dxc712 »

My car key snapped earlier today.

I have to insert the broken off part of the key into the ignition and use the main part containing the fob pressed against it to turn the key.

How much is a new car key likely to cost?

A service centre gave me the number for someone who could do it but this wouldn't be done by the vehicle manufacturer.

Could any insurace be invalidated by getting someone else to make me a new key?

The car is seven years old and I don't think its under an extended warranty.

Thanks.

It depends who is the service venter.

How would the insurance company know? Ask them or read the policy if there's any mention.

I doubt a broken key would be under extended warranty unless specifies, again you need to check and read the warranty.

Don't you have a spare key?

I have a spare key but I want to always have a second key which would mean getting a new one.

Dxc712, If the key is snapped in the lock barrel then you will probably need a new lock barrel and keys, unless you can find an automotive locksmith locally who can extract the broken part without damaging the lock. As to how much ???? no idea.

I think he means the blade has come away from the remote fob. you can buy the fob and fit the existing blade but it has to be coded. Sometimes you can find a guide on how to pair keys depending on the car make. The fobs are quite cheap on Amazon.

I got the key fixed as well as a new battery in the fob for my spare keys.

£70 in all, I was very happy with that. :boxing:
