Please help me tile this garden table!

Post by Tinkjon »

I have a metal table frame that I want to tile and leave outdoors - most research I've done seems to suggest I can't do it but there MUST be a way, as outdoor tiled tables do exist!

I was going to put a sheet of marine ply on it and then porcelain tile on top, but apparently ply is not a good base for tiles. Could I use a decoupling membrane on top of the ply and then tile?
I then read about cement boards but not sure they are waterproof for outdoor use? I asked a tile shop for advice about a backer board suitable for outdoors but they said there aren't any!

I then found a product called Marmox, which seemed promising (though they haven't replied to my query about its suitability). Only problem with this is that it doesn't come in long enough sections, so I'd have to join a few boards together and I can imagine that not then beign waterproof.

Any suggestions?

I made some coasters for my outdoor decking area using some no more ply 6mm and some mosaics I had left over from a job. Grouted up the joints using normal bathroom grout and adhesive was my usual powered adhesive for bathrooms.

Essentially it's a simple tiling job and they've sat outside over 2 winters and are exactly the same as the day I made them.

just saying...................Tinkjon asked the question way back in April, and he was last around a month later, so I doubt he will ever read your reply. (Always check the date a post was made, and when the OP was last active, before you post  .)

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.
