Paint Mapping - help!

Post by aidy55 »

I seem to have the exact same issue but i doubt ill get the builder to reskim for free. The house was built 8 years ago and we are painting the hall. This mapping issue only seems to affect brick walls. Plaster board upstairs and ceilings are fine.

I knew we had the issue as when i painted kitchen and utility room i noticed it.

Prior to starting the hall i gave it a good sand, i even had the orbital on it. I have applied one coat of leyland acrylic primer and can see the mapping in various parts, some parts are great mind you. But issue needs resolved.

Should i continue sanding and applying more coats of primer or is this a waste of time

Any suggestions most welcome

Paint Mapping - help!

Ive give the walls a good sanding, and applied one coat of gardz and then a coat of leyland acrylic primer.

Its an improvement but you can stil see the maping.

Going to give it another sand and coat of primer in the morning, see if its any better.

Is there anything else i should be going.

Would cover stain be a good shout?

I'd be looking at applying a lining paper, or in this instance, a fibreliner such as Wallrock.

It'll even out any physical imperfections and defects in the surface, and create a uniform base for paint. Coverstain is fine if you have staining bleeding through, though on cold walls I'd be more inclined to recommend Alkali Resistant Primer, as any staining is likely lime based.

It presents as efflorescence, a white powdery residue, normally at the edges of a water stain. It's quite aggressive and needs blocking, though you'd have noticed it by now I suspect.

I thought about lining but if i was going to pay for a decorator to paper we probably hsve went for a design wallpaper without the need for painting. Sometimes i wish we had done that.

But then again we hsve three kids and good scrubbble Matt is maybe best

Im pleased with the improvement, its went from looking terrible from a distance to have to get uo close to notice it.

I think the sanding was the key factor in repair, feathering out the eges, coat of gardz and ended up 4 coats of acrylic primer with each coat sanded inbetween.

I have two coats now to do in crown clean xtream light grey. Hopefully this makes it less noticeable
