Washing Machine woes

Post by dewaltdisney »

Just returning from holiday we have a stack of washing and Mrs D puts the first load in and she found it had not spun properly. I messed around and found the buttons did not respond. Now we have had a bad run on machines the last few years with the Candy we had before lasting 18 months and always playing up. I replaced it with a Hoover and now just out of the 2 year warranty, it is not working. I do not usually touch them but I thought this time I would have a go at sorting it. I tried to set up the wireless connection (which we never bothered with) as it can show fault codes but it was hopeless trying to get it linked to my phone. I know a Ukrainian guy who is very good with this sort of thing and I asked him to have a look at it. He pulled the motherboard out as he had detected a short. Using a magnifier and his phone he found the cause which was a blown out hole in the circuit board. He said it was impossible to repair as the boards are laminated with circuits below or something I did not understand. He said if got another board it was no guarantee it would not go again as the underlaying fault was not apparent. So onto Currys and I am trying Beko this time on his recommendation. We shall see, my sinking fund for white goods is taking a bashing.

Washing Machine woes

I had the same problem with my elderly Indesit wash/dryer.

Again I was lucky to trace it to a corroded/overload hole in the pcb (we call them via's). Fortunately washing machines being simple & cheap it was only a double sided board (no inner layers) so I was able to pin the via (short piece of wire soldered both sides).

The reason it had failed it was the output of the power supply to the rest of the board yet only used one tiny via, nowhere near man enough to carry the current!

Thanks for your comment, I think I understand. I think this board was a triple layer from what he said but I was in the position where I could have done half the cost of a new machine in repairs that might not have lasted. I put £20 a month into a sinking fund for this reason and it is actually quite healthy so I am not feeling a hit to badly. :thumbright:

Washing Machine woes

I would say that Candy is the worst made washing machine, and don't even go near a washer dryer. (Lets not go there)

Little known fact, washing machines actually need to be used properly, with care, most folk don't, they just bung in loads of stuff and a soap bobble press a button and hope it doesn't go wrong.
Yes, they are not as well made as they used to be or as Miele are made, but if you want it to last, look after it, check all clothes pockets every time, make sure it is on the right setting for the wash load, and NEVER overload it.

Mrs D looks after our machines as we use only the cold wash cycles and never overload the drum. We use Dettol antibacterial rinse so it never smells or clogs and I clear the filter every few months. This was some electrical fault that caused the board to blow.

Most people say they do not overload their machine, when infact, they do overload it. How do you know your machine is never overloaded?
There is also more to looking after your/ any washing machine than just cleaning the filter, anti bacterial wash is not required if you look after your machine. But well done for cleaning the filter.

Taking on board what you said about weight we used our digital suitcase weighing gadget to test the weight of a bag load of shirts. The bag was to capacity but it was only 3 kg. The machine is rated for 10Kg

Washing Machine woes

I now believe they are disposable and it is the luck of the draw. Over the years we have had more washing machines than any other white goods. The old electro-mechanical switches seemed to be the most robust although clunky. My pal back in the 70s had a Hoover Keymatic which had an oblong shaped plastic key with slots cut around the edge. This gave four wash programs by inserting the key with different edges. I thought it overly complicated.
