I want to spray paint the cover of a Pioneer RT 909 Reel to Reel recorder.

I intended to soda blast it before painting. What products would you advise using?

Post #4 suggested anti rust primer->metal paint (flat black)->high gloss enamel

Can you recommend specific products.

Spray painting Reel to Reel recorder cover

It might be worth looking for a local firm that do powder coating. For diy spraying look at acid etch primer as it will give a stable base on metal for top coats.

Spray painting Reel to Reel recorder cover

Post by premierdecorators »

Spray painting the cover of your Pioneer RT-909 Reel to Reel recorder sounds like a great project! Here’s a step-by-step approach along with product recommendations:

1. Soda Blasting
Preparation: Make sure to thoroughly clean the surface before soda blasting. This will help remove any dirt or grease.
Soda Blasting: This is a great method for removing old paint and rust without damaging the underlying metal. You can rent a soda blaster or take the cover to a professional service if you don't have the equipment.
2. Primer
Product Recommendation: Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer (either the self-etching or the rust-inhibitive kind).
Why: This primer provides excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance. The self-etching option is particularly good for bare metal.
3. Metal Paint
Product Recommendation: Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover (Flat Black).
Why: This paint provides good coverage, durability, and a smooth finish. Flat black is perfect for a classic look.
4. Topcoat
Product Recommendation: Krylon Fusion for Plastic or Rust-Oleum Gloss Enamel (high gloss).
Why: Both provide a durable finish, with Krylon Fusion designed to adhere to multiple surfaces, while Rust-Oleum Gloss Enamel gives a classic high-gloss look that enhances durability.
5. Application Tips
Spraying: Use light, even coats for each layer, allowing proper drying time between coats (usually 20-30 minutes for spray paints).
Safety: Ensure you’re working in a well-ventilated area and wearing appropriate safety gear, including a mask and gloves.
6. Finishing Touch
Once fully dried, consider a clear coat for added protection. Rust-Oleum Clear Enamel can add durability and enhance the glossiness of the paint.
Summary
Following these steps with the recommended products will help you achieve a professional-looking finish on your Pioneer RT-909. Good luck with your restoration project, and I hope it turns out beautifully! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
