Clipping Cat 6 Cable Outside

Post by otronics »

Hi.

I need to run some (external grade) Cat 6 cable on an outside wall.

Do fire rated clips need to be used?

Looking at my existing stock:

I have a pack of these (DeWalt Wall Dog's)

https://www.dewalt.co.uk/product/dfm424 ... tid=579391

And these (Prysmian AP7 fire-rated clips)

https://www.screwfix.com/p/prysmian-ap7 ... pack/89697

Anyone know if any of these are likely to rust in time?

I did look at Linian clips but they are pricey.

Any other options?

Thanks.

Wall dogs are good, but they are only a screw, not a clip, so I can't see them being any use in your case. The Prysmian clips are commonly known as P clips, and are mostly used on FP200 (fire resistant) cable as they are slightly smaller than FP200 they hold it very well.
I would use neither in your case. I would run it in black PVC conduit Click me You would not have to use externally rated cable, and it will never droop (Unlike cables)

Fire rated clips/ securing method should be used indoors, the idea being if there is a fire the clips continue to hold the cable up out of the (fireman's) way. You should not clip to any timber. (3 guesses why) And you should not be using plastic wall plugs when using fire rated clips.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Standard black cable clips, if your bricks are soft used nail plugs

Sorry - I should have been more clear: using the Wall Dogs in conjunction with P clips is what I meant.

P clips (pyro clips) are not rated for outdoor use, on heavier coax (Westflex 103) I have use swa cleats

standard black clips are fine, Tower clips do well outside even in direct sunlight

Sorry to not agree, but P clips are rated for outdoor use, as is FP200. (Prysmian FP+) Often used for emergency lights that are outside.

I have always understood the fact they are called P clips has nothing to do with pyro, more to do with if you hold it right, it looks like the letter P
