hi all
i hope you are having a nice xmas break
i have a fan heater (branded) and noticed that when i went to take plug out of socket, the plug was "hot." to describe further, it wasn't hot that i couldn't touch it, but if i held it in my hands its would heat my hand eventually to me releasing it. its definitely not warm. the heater works as it should. i don't leave it on for long, but have had it on for more than 20 mins once. heater is 1 year old. the plug is moulded. i'm asking if this is normal.
thanks in advance

electric fan heater plug hot
Post by Someone-Else »
Electrical things get hot because of too much resistance. It is not uncommon for plugs and for that matter sockets to get warm and sometimes overheat / catch fire*
In an ideal world a factory fitted plug will not get hot, but we don't live in an ideal world. It's your choice what you do next. Complain/take it back or cut the plug off and fit a decent brand plug.
You don't say the Kw rating, I guess 2kw? if it is 3Kw it should not have a plug but be permanently connected.
*Yes, it is true, but unlike the movies it doesn't "explode in a ball of flames in a few seconds" it often takes hours, just getting hotter and hotter, but that is part of the problem, its left on too long and never checked.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

A fuse works by the metal inside it melting, so anything with a fuse in, will get hot, to me, it sounds if it is getting too hot, feel some other plugs, like washing machine, tumble drier, or dishwasher and compare.

Try the heater in a different socket. If the plug still gets hot then the plug needs replacing. If id doesn't then this would point to an issue with the original socket.
