Skirtings Around Steps

Post by McKnze21 »

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could please assist on how to fit skirtings around steps. I have been fitting skirtings myself and I have had no issues elsewhere until I have arrived at these two areas. I will post pictures of the two areas.

Some have advised to simply fit 45 mitres and follow contour of steps. However, prior to this (as you will see on the wall, there was a diagonal piece of wood there) so I am not sure if this would be a better look and how to do this as I only have 120mm grooved skirtings or 70mm grooved architrave/facings.

Any help or advice be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I think it might be an idea to draw up a paper template (for each side) to emulate what would have been a stair stringer. When you have formed a pleasing look, I would have a curve, you could transcribe the template to some 12mm MDF and fashion the mitres to join them. I think it would have more logical look.

I would only fit skirting to the sides to cover the gap beyween the wall and floor. On the right, I would fill in the holes in the wall by the door frame and paint it all. Whatever you do with skirting and the steps will look naff.

i agree templates and try??
lh side string at an angle look would not look right so just follow the right angles
converse the rh side would look far too fussy so angle string effect[string being the large timber at an angle on stars]

I'm a little confused as it looks like one step in the first photo but two in the second . How do these connect ? It might look odd with a string just on one side but I can't see how it would look right in the first photo...

You can put a dummy mdf string as before but it's probably easier to mitre the skiting and I think in this scenario would look better.
