Bosch PSB 1800 won't hammer.

Post by sweatypalms »

Hi,
A few years ago I bought a Bosch PSB 1800 drill. I bought it because I wanted to drill into both wood and masonry (mainly brick). However, I am not familiar with tools, and although I'm sure I was operating it correctly, with correct masonry bit etc (on advice of local hardware shop), and a fully charged battery, I could not get it to work on brick. It made just a small hole and then stopped. I tried with various types of brick, and then just figured I was doing something wrong, and gave up. This year, however, I needed to do some work done on brick, and asked a neighbour, who had a big hammer drill to help me. I think he knows what he is doing, so first of all I asked him if I was doing anything wrong with my PB 1800. He tried it out, but had the same results as me: just a small hole. He said it was probably just too weak, and as far as he could see, I was doing nothing wrong. This surprised me, because it's a Bosch, and it is supposed to work with brick, and my brick is nothing special.
So I decided to join this forum, and ask you if you can think of anything here that I might be doing wrong, or is it really too weak for the task?

I just googled your drill, it's listed as a drill driver, which often means it's feeble, but it should drill masonry (but not a lot of it)

About 5 years ago, a forum member (now gone) called redkoatz asked the same question, I made a video showing what to do, below is that video.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

To drill decent holes you need one of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb653 ... 240v/6846h

These SDS drills have a very good hammer action and they will make drilling easier and more accurate. On top of this, you can switch off the rotor and use it as a power chisel for lifting tiles, breaking concrete, chopping out fence posts, and all the slog jobs. Now you might not think you need one but a powerful tool is always handy to have.

Depends what you are drilling into and how big the bit is, as the video I posted 5 years ago shows, you have to have a sharp bit and the drill set to hammer, an SDS is a bit like using a hammer to crack a nut.
