Why is this paint patchy??

Post by Fc320 »

Newly plastered walls. Waited 4 weeks and mist coated then 2x coats of Lick paint (no issues elsewhere in the house) - done 3 coats and no joy.

Have tried sanding again and painting over a section in undercoat to see if any joy in covering the patchiness.

Any ideas?? Thanks!

Why is this paint patchy??

Generally, patches are caused by absorption differences in the wall. The mist coat tends to sort this as the watery mix gets sucked into the plaster and as it dries it allows a full strength coat to sit evenly. But, you have to be careful to let the mist coat dry thoroughly as water remaining in the fresh later can affect the drying times in areas and that can cause patches Another cause of patches might be contamination on the surface like silicones or the like on the surface prior to paint. I would let it stand for a week and if still as patchy consider Zinsser Gardz to seal it up.

I hope this helps

Thanks! Can you paint top coat straight over Gardz? I’ve got a can of that so hopefully a good solution.

Yes, but lightly sand over any nibs, use dull paper, and wipe down. Just rub the sandpaper on some concrete to dull it off. The emulsion can go straight over.
