Squeaky hinges.

Post by Rorschach »

As part of the renovations I did last year I replaced all of the door hinges. The old ones were original to the property so pushing 50 years old, they were well worn with a lot play in them and rusting too.

New hinges are much nicer looking satin nickel, no wobble, nice and smooth. BUT, after a few months they squeak and creak. On the old hinges I used to use grease, but this was messy and ugly as it always oozes out and leaves a dirty smudge on the frame eventually. Any recommendations for something a bit cleaner and tidier? Some kind of dry lubricant would nice. I have used graphite powder in the past but expect this might be messy too, especially on white paintwork.

Hi.

I use WD40 Silicone lubricant.

Another option, which I haven't yet tried, would be Dry PTFE Lubricant.

Over the years I have used different lubricants on my door hinges including 3 in 1 oil and WD40. It is a rare occurrence for a squeak on my doors so I tend to grab what is nearest to hand and use that. I squirt it on the hinges, waft the door a couple of times and then wipe off with a bit of tissue. That PTFE spray is dry and might be a good bet.
