Decorating with rising Damp help!

Post by caitste »

Hi all! I am currently living in a family members second property that suffers with damp. The bedroom I use had an awful damp smell and the lining paper was practically peeling itself off in places so I have stripped it. In the process of stripping the wallpaper the plaster has blown in some areas (steamer job, partly my fault) so I would massively appreciate advice on the following:
-which primer should I use before and after filling any cracks/large gaps in plaster that will not worsen any damp
- I have bought zinnser watertite paint but unsure at which point I should apply this? Over a damp proof primer or does that defeat the object?
-Any other tips/advice I should consider around sanding etc, some walls are still thick with flaky paint and have been filled by previous owners over the years as seen in the picture

Thanks in advance!
(Please note, fixing the damp fully is going to be costly and it’s not currently an option, I know that whatever I do it is not a permanent solution but I just need a temporary fix until then)download/file.php?mode=view&id=70453htt ... w&id=70452

Well, you know in your heart that there is no simple solution here, you have to find the source of the damp. To me that looks like it is coming from above so you need to start there. It canbe something as simple as blocked gutter that results in rainwater spilling into the wall and moisture finding its way down. Is there a tile loose or chimney lead flashing damaged. Nowdays you can get a cheap drone up to have look without risk of ladders, do you know anyone who has one? You would do better meantime to leave the walls exposed and help them dry out. You need to find the cause of the damp sealing it in is not the option. I am sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.
