Double sided tape

Post by Cannyfixit »

I have recently bought a new reg plate for my bike, as you know most reg plates are held on with some kind of bolt fixing, I am trying to keep the plate as new so I thought I would try double sided tape I cleaned both the metal bracket and the plate surfaces with alcohol but three times I have done this now and it keeps falling off I want it to be good and strong before I set off for a ride out next week so any ideas please

Clean all surfaces and get some sticky pads, then use a bead of clear silicone. The pads will hold it in place until the silicone cures and it will be fixed for ever.

If you ever need to remove it you will be able to split it from what it is stuck to and then just pull off the silicone

Best fix it on well, gf was fined £20 for not displaying a rear plate after it fell off when bolts came undone.
I started out with nothing, I still have most of it.

when i want to grip well with double sided i tripple up to give it some thickness to irn out deviations

take a bit twice the length you need fold the sticky sides together remove the backing on one side leaving a small bit of backing tape sticking out for the other half

stick a new third bit onto the open sticky side then remove new backing bit 'stick strip onto plate repeat process till all plate coverd

use the backing flaps you left to easily remove the rest :thumbright:

Halfords do double sided sticky pads for exactly this. Mines been on for about 3 years now, come rain, ice, sun, 80mph.

You need the thick sticky tape/pads, they allow some discrepency between parts, and a small amout of vibration.

I wouldnt mess about with no nails personally. Be a pain to clean off if you need to replace it

Adhesive tapes should not be used at temperatures below 16° C. At temps less than this a layer of condensation forms.

Therefore warm up the surfaces with a hairdrier or something, alternatively use something like Rapid Araldite. It cures in about 50mins so just hold it in place with a bit of gaffer tape for an hour and it will be Ok. However as its still pretty cold get the hairdrier out and warm it up and it will probably only take 20-30 mins.
