Adding outside light to exisiting light switch

Post by pudding »

Hi. I have just put up an outside security light. I'd like to wire this up to the light switch in the back door porch.

The light at the back door has 3 core+earth (red+yellow+blue+earth) going into a two-gang 2-way switch. The wire I have connected the security light to is 2 core+earth. At the moment for the single porch light, just the red and black are connected to the common and L1.

Is it possible and how do I connect this up to have the outside light work from the second switch?

Heres a pic:

Thanks.

It is not possible to wire this up to a switch as there is no neutral inside of the switch.

You can wire lights so that there is a neutral in there, but your does not have one.

You can see some diagrams here-

You would have to wire the new light up to the ceiling rose for it to work as you need to pick up a neutral wire.

Ok thanks. Is it possible to wire the outside light to the same switch as the inside one so one switch does both?

The wire was already in place when I bought the house a few months ago, with one end just hanging outside under the rafters and the other not connected up to the switch. Seems strange to put it there if its useless and cant be wired up?
