OK I've read loads of posts - and finally learned what tanking is...
In the bathroom I'm going to have to strip the plaster back to bare brick as it's all pretty crap.
I was hoping to be able to dot and dab the backer board onto the wall but have read enough to know this is a stupid idea.
The bathroom is already very small and the idea of using full depth battons to hold up the backer board will take too much room.
I don't have the time to have the walls plastered and to let them dry for 6 weeks.
And the bricks will not be smooth enough to tile onto.
It's going to be a shower over a bath so I will probably tank over what ever goes onto the walls - the BAL site suggests plasterboard is OK with a tanked finish, but it makes me nervous and would prefer something utterly water resistant.
So what do I do?
Thanks for any advice

does it REALLY need battens, though? Secure with plenty of plugs into the wall and it is not going to go anywhere really. Use plastic packers if extra leveling needed to keep dead vertical.
Can't see why that shouldn't work

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

all I know is that Aquapanel is great stuff and I don't think it ever deteriorates - I have left it outside for years and years and it is still as good as new. Maybe Tank over the Aquapanel for a Belt and Braces approach??
