ok I remember now
its mainly happens to machines with AMD processors, usually HP machines as they include both an Intel and AMD driver in their pre-installed version of windows(which conflict) and cause the machine to fail to boot.
Also was some issues with the AMD graphics drivers.
Are there some new issues cropping up that I've missed?

no you covered most of them but it drives me mad as i have always built my own computers and had to reinstall windows from scratch and before service pack 3 was ok to down load and now microsoft have changed it and anyone that down loads it might get a problem

I had a friend with a similar problem the update would not download - he was running a copied version of Vista is yours a genuine Vista program ?

Installing updates causes more problems than it fixes in my experience when your installing lots of them, way i do it with n-lite or v-lite, slipstream all the service packs and hotfixes and burn a new disc to install, installs like a dream when they are all integrated on an install disc.
