Marc1106 DO NOT TILE ONTO A BACKING PLASTER if your gonna use bonding or hardwall you should get it skimmed, and remember a skim coat or a float and set wall will only carry aprox 20kg Per meter sq so check the weight on a box! before sticking em up!
I always thought a rougher plaster would give better adhesion for tiling and I understand your view that the rougher plaster will dry out the adhesive too quickly . I looked at BAL website as I use their gear often and they suggest 2 coats of SBR bond diluted unless the plaster is very smooth in which case it should be keyed first.
I would therefore use undercoat plus SBR in futue as I think it would give the strongest adhesion. My worry would be that Skim does not bond as well to substrates as bonding or hardwall do.

Ok completely lost as never plastered so looks like I'm paying someone a fortune to do it all afterall lol!

Should only be one batch of plaster, maybe two bags. Half a days work for most and not challenging in the slightest.
If you are told more than a days work plus materials, I would get another price.

Yeh was wondering what was a good quote etc. I'm going to ask him what he would do? If he says sand then I'll sand to save some money so hopefully all he'll need to do is plaster the board I've fitted then tile!
Any idea what the average hourly charge? Or charge per metre or whatever they charge at lol!
Been given one idea by one of the boys on here but more gratefully received so I don't get done! lol

There is no point plastering the board, it will be better left as you have replaced it.
Where are you in somerset? Near WSM, my aunt pays about 100 a day for a local lad who she thinks is OK. A busy professional may be 150 but will probably not take all day so be inquisitive and you should end up with a fair deal.
