Woah guys......feel like saying in my best scouse accent "Alright now cam down, cam down"
(Anyone seen the wobbling cat image??)
I hope I can print out these posts coz I don't want to start an argument here.
Ok, first off can't copy to cd from 6GB coz no writer in machine. 2nd could put 6GB into newer machine, USB sticks out of question, but maybe try to copy to space on 20Gb drive???
Failing that anyone know how to resurrect a once working 3.5" floppy drive which appears to work on the system, but is physically dead with the exception of a green power light but no action???
Next option shout "LAZARUS"!! (Those with a AMIGA background will have heard of that one!!) By the way not looking for a dual boot system, just looking to use the 6GB for data storage of reasonably smallish files.
Next scenario: Got a CD-RW drive in newer PC, but software way out of date. Tried to get an update but no support for ME systems from AHEAD. Get drive into new machine then copy to 3.5" disc which does work or is that wishful thinking....???
If it means that I have to reinstall all the programs then I guess all I need are basic word/XL and program save files, maybe a few Piccy's in which to transfer to the newer PC. Will it work if I do what I have suggested here then reformat the 6GB drive in the newer PC as mentioned above?? (That's without re-reading the posts again.) Think I'm beginning to lose it now, spent too long on this reply!!! Ha-Ha. Failing that I think I'll probably do what Scot-c suggests and look around for another PC box or build one myself, always fancied doing something like that. First time for everything.
I thought in principal it was an easy task, not too confused by the different methods you've all suggested, but it's good to post (rather than talk-joke) I think I'll have a careful read of your suggestions before finally deciding what to do. Really appreciate your help here. I probably won't do it immediately as I have a house to renovate (that's another thread in the DIY forum!!)
Just for the record I started off with a Binatone 5Star. Yes Pong was THE game!! Then came the Atari VCS2600 console system - I still have mine working. Next came the Commodore VIC20 with tape drive and the best game I had was JET PAC. A full 8Kb game in machine code-Brilliant it was!! Next up was an Amstrad CPC464 which I upgraded to a DDI1 & FD1 double disk system with printer - Best game here was ELITE by Firebird. After this was a Amiga 500 which I upgraded to an A1200 still my best best game here was ELITE with filled vector graphics if I remember correct when it came out before finally getting my P2-333, which sadly they have not recreated ELITE. However, there have been the Wing Commander series which had me hooked for weeks or was it months, before finally discovering Duke Nukem et al....could reminisce all night here.
Scot-c: A quick ditty worth mentioning here. Don't know if you go to computer fairs, but I managed to pick up an Amiga Emulator CD for the PC for a few quid albeit about 10-12yrs ago, although not having used it as both PC systems rather unstable. The front cover is a white background with the AMIGA hand/floppy disk logo with AMIGA Workbench printed on the floppy upside down and in bottom right corner is the number 98 and 3 screen shots on the left side arranged vertically. Compatible with Win95/MS-DOS/Unix & Apple Mac. Full instructions are printed on the inside & back covers. Main emulator files are winzipped and PC based. We're talking the age of WINZIP95 here. Happy hunting.

The issue your having with the constant light on the floppy drive can be caused by an incorrectly inserted cable or faulty cable. Make sure you have the cable with the red side at pin 0 at both ends and try another cable if possible.
You can transfer your data such as pics and games etc just by connecting the 6gb drive as a slave and then using windows explorer to copy over to the new drive as they are all stored in folders. Programs and system setting cant be brought accross but there is no need to do that anyway.
As for the amiga, i still have my A1200 in the loft, il probably get it out once ive sorted my house. If anyone is after a good emulator then winUAE is a great program, and if anyone wants any amiga games to run on this then let me know as i have about 7gb worth of them on my server lol. My fav games used to be the chaos engine and the alien breed games :)

Just logged back in to see recent reply(s) and am thinking about renaming the subject to: Computers of yester-year remembered here!! LOL
Thanks guys for all your help - gonna print out now before the moderator deletes it off the system or I forget to print it anyway!!! Ha-ha-ha.
It is funny how we remember what we had and how 'good' the technology was at the time. I remember being well chuffed at spending £170 on a 4Mb FAST Ram PCMCIA expansion card for my old A1200.
Must admit though Amstrad CPC computer got me through my A Level Computer Science exam module back in...........
DOS was just about on its way out and the idea of a computer network was the "in" thing in our class. We spent our spare time playing "Worm" !!!
OK the year was 1988-ish.

You can connect up a hard drive from another computer just make sure the computer is turned off and the jumper is set to slave or use cable select, when it boots up you will probabl have to take administative control of the drive to access the contents, hard drives are that cheap and the prices are dropping so fast is it worth it, you can get a 1tb drive for less than £70.

Thanks for the info Popeye67. I take it the "in talk" is now Tiga-bytes and not giga bytes??? At my guess is 1TB 100GB???
Am looking at probably buying a new PC in the very near future, but I have a mixture of info on the 2 HDDs that I need to retain. So with all the info I have from the forum should be able to carry this out reasonably easy......

pc world......
I'm surprised they had it labelled right....and that it wasn't on sale for £169 given that they usually are way more than anywhere else.
I don't buy from PC world apart from printers as any component - hard drives etc I've gotten from there fail in next to no time due to the rough handling PC Worlds "expert staff" subject them to

I normally use Tekheads.co.uk or sometimes Scan
went off ebuyer as they kept messing up my orders
and dabs as they use the hell known as HDNL aka Britains worst courier company
shame tiger direct dont operate in the uk, some people think they are terrible but I've never personally had any issues.
