Like I have said it's difficult to judge something by seeing a picture of it and probably the best thing to do is let someone with experience use it and see if it is useful or not.

I am sure that if was manufactured it would sell especially in the big sheds, just look at the brickie- brick laying device, I would not have one given me, but the guy has sold hundreds of thousands of them.

And if you feel we have been hard on you then it's a good job you never asked on the screwfix forum.

Thinking about it, I could see it's potential for radiators- you could align the two legs with the hanging holes on the radiator and then transfer these measurements to the wall? I guess it would be useful for some people.

Have you no pictures of it being used in different situations?

Is this item in production i.e. you were wondering whether to buy it ? Or are you the inventor of it in which case well done :thumbright:. Like UHM has said some 'gimmicks' sell well and the likes of BnQ and Homebase sell a lot of other gimmicks - I know 'cos my garage is full with them  . If your trying to promote it, well......

It's not available yet which is why the image is a computer generated one at this stage - was just looking for some feedback about it - would like to get it in such places as B&Q because as you say, there are garages full of these type of items - hopefully, though, when people buy it, they will find it is quite useful as it can be used as a standard long level but has other features in addition.

Now we're on a different tack.

What about....

Hi,
We've got a new product, not been launched yet and we don't have any production models yet (but when we do we'd like to send 1 along to UHM for testing and review).
It’s aimed at the keen but not serious DIY'er but feel that once it's potential is realised that we will convert serious DIY'ers and even some trade.

It does.........

It works by.........

It's made up of ........

We've got some ideas that it would be good for which are ........

It achieve these results by ...........

As we say it's a DIY tool and really not aimed at the Trade but we'd love to hear what your think about it as in ...

1. Can you think of any other form or functions you think it would be good for i.e. something you do that a DIY'er could use this for?
2. Would you see yourself using it? (If so, How?)
3. Any ideas for a name (and be gentle with me?)

Or something similar, I think you may have got a less harsh response from the pro's but it would still have been ragged as they and the more serious DIY’ers don't have time or the room for additional items like this.

Thanks for the ideas Jaeger and skiking - sounds like a good idea to send one in for review - when the first ones are made up I will have to contact UHM to find out if there is any interest in receiving one for review and/or some for a competition/giveaway.

Just been looking on the rest of the site for UHM contact details but cant find them - do I just PM the poster UHM ?

Yes, just send a PM to UHM. 8-)

Its a larger version of this basically.
dead link removed

I have been thinking about this idea quite a bit now, and how i do such tasks, generally marks on the front of the level does it for repeat marks.

I guess a lot of peoples problems are to do with measuring, so something that can take the error out of a task, or at least lower it can only be a good thing.

Another thing id like to question is the slide. Obviously you have got a design, but have you taken into account if the level will still slide into position accuratly if it gets a dribble of paint or maybe a lump of tile grout in the runner?

You may think im being harsh, but i just dont want you to spend your cash making something before a simple thing is thought about. Its often the simplest things that ruin a great idea.

just to diss it a bit more, I understand now that you mean your marking the heights of the brackets, not the widths...

However I would only measure ONE bracket from the floor at an equal to the other rads, then level the 2nd bracket to the first, then this ensures the rad is level, even if the floor isn;t!

I do not think you are being harsh at all - these comments and suggestions are just what I wanted.

I suppose it is similar to the product you linked to which loos like it can place marers at set distances but this product has long 'legs' which means, if I use the previous example of rad fitting, you can set the width of the fixing brackets horizontally, then using the sliding markers within the legs you can mark the two centers for each bracket vertically. Similarly, with fitting shelf, offer the level/legs up to the shelf bracket(s), fix the positions so that when you move the level to the wall there is no measuring required, just mark the holes you just fixed.

It is hard to describe what I mean using text alone but another idea I have thought of is to use YouTube to show videos of the applications.

p.s. HintonHeating - I mean you measure the distance between the vertical holes on each bracet AND the horizontal distances at the same time rather than separate operations

another thing this thing would be good for was for putting shelves up. ie just measure the distance between hole centres on the brackets and set the level up to it. also any apliance with pre drilled holes again just set the level up and off you go. especially if you've got a few things to put up that are the same.

I used one of those levels last week to help me hang eight radiators.

I did a rough calculation of the time it saved me and it turns out I can now retire early and I have a bigger pension, I say everyone should get one.
