I actually got this call. An Indian Lady called and thank God she was sweet. She asked whether my computer was facing issues. I have recently downloaded an antivirus but was facing issues like alerts and popups. She seemed to understand, again worked through what they call remote support.
The machine is fine now. I did think they were a scam, but as my computer is working fine I am wondering can they really be a scam?

Laura,
There are enough 'Computer Help Forums' where members offer genuine helpful advice for computer problems, without relying on 'a sweet Indian lady' who just happens to phone right at the time a computer is playing up.
Members on forums offer help and advice for free because they like doing it, but you should ask yourself why a company in India would spend their own money and time calling the UK to offer help with no charge to the recipient.
The first thing I would do is hang up and ask for help on a reputable forum.
Firstly, just to check that your PC is clean, please open your Internet Explorer go to Tools -> click on Windows Updates and get the latest updates for your computer.
Then click Start -> Run -> type MRT -> OK. Then run a full scan.
MRT is the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool that updates everytime MS send out updates.
What antivirus program is it that was swamping you with popups?
Remember that it has to check with you about some things that it finds, and also to warn you if it finds anything dubious.
What advice did this nice lady offer and what did she get you to download or do to help you.
Please post back with some answers as I am not happy with this scam at all and suspect they may have 'got at' your computer.
