Supposedly a childrens's play den

This is where you can post pictures of extremely poor workmanship, whether it is done by a dodgy tradesman or by an incompetent DIY'er. Instructions on how to post pictures can be found in here.

Thank-you, this sort of feed back will help me go back to Trading standards / Consumer Direct to put together a case. Am loosing faith in that it will result in anything positive, but at least I will know that I have done everything I can - after the horse has bolted

contact the company and tell them you want a full refund. Also tell them if they say no your next three calls will be to 'which', 'rogue traders', and watchdog.

A quick question ,was this bought over the internet and was it custom made ?

If it wasnt custom made and bought over the internet the distance selling regulations apply.you should be able ot return it for a full refund within a certain time frame as per the DSR.

I have just moved to W. Sussex (yesterday!) so I'm not too far away. I could help you to put together a case for getting a refund. I could also design and build a new structure.
If you are interested in either then you can send me a PM and I'll send you my contact details. You can view some pictures of a playhouse I built last year in the showcase gallery -castle-t14411.html

Is this blatant advertising?

you must give them reasonable chance to fix it to a satisfactory standard

when fully constructed most or some off the problems may disssapear
some off the weak spots may be supported by sheet material or other timbers
unsafe bolts can be shortend

in general it dosnt look very strong neat or tidy but we are assuming you have put it together properly
if holes dont line up you are assembling it differently to what it was origionaly
this may simply be you dont understand how its properly assembled and are doing it wrong i simply dont know

untill the structure is fully up we simply dont know what problems will exist

The first pieces were delivered about 3 weeks ago, as soon as we started putting it together I raised concerns about the safety aspect, we were told to go out and buy wood ourselves to rectify it, this was after we had already had to go out and buy all of the screws and bolts as these were also missing from the delivery, they were delivered later, when they were found on the delivery van, but we'd already started constructing it

It was only when we started laying the decking did we discover we we 4 lengths short. Again we were told to go out and source it ourselves. A local timber merchants delivered the pieces, but they were nothing close to what we already had. We carried on looking at other timber merchants and DIY stores, but nothing was a good match. When we went back about this he whined that it would cost him over £100 to get it sent to us, considering delivery of what we'd received cost £80, I couldn't work out why this was dearer. But surely if that's what it would cost him to rectify it then so be it. He is now refusing to deliver the missing pieces, he said he would come and take it, build it in his garden in Cornwall, if if was perfect I would then have to pay out again to have it delivered back to my address - why he couldn't rectify it in situe I don't understand. However he has said he will no longer reply to e-mails and dared me to go through trading standards. A real gent!

We can't put it together without the missing parts, and we daren't attach the roof, as it will collapse with out major additional strengthening - which is also ugly corregated black material so we don't see how it can be completed.

Regarding putting it together, we are following the A4 sheet with 3 diagrams on that we were given, and the numbered pieces have been assembled according to the diagrams.

Thanks geewiz for your kind offer. What would getting a case together entail, and what would the extra costs be? What do you think that chances are of getting a positive result?

Re the blatent advertising - I'd be happy for anyone reputable to build the kids a den they could actually use, I just can't afford to pay out again with out getting a refund on the original, it was an expensive birthday present in the 1st place, paying out again would be their present until they were teenagers!

Nothing would make me happier than posting his e-mail address and phone number on this site. Don't know whether it would work against me if I have to go through legitimate means to get my money back.

Just had a joiner round here about half an hour ago to inspect it - it was even worse than I thought! He is horrified that someone can send out something like that for children to play on. He came up with things wrong that I didn't realise, but sends shivers down my back, had we just put it together and let the kids play. This man gives joiners and legitimate, quality woodworkers a bad name

A quick search does not reveal any other complaints about this firm but if you google "SD Joinery Cornwall" this thread comes up in the results high up on the first page so in a sense they are already named and shamed.

Don't know whether you remember me from a few weeks ago, just a little note to let you know that we never heard a thing from the recorded delivery letter we were told to send by trading standards, so looks like we are heading down the small claims court - great!! It still looks the same as in the photos, except it has already started to bow, must be the weight from all of the rain. Pay Pal instructed us to call the police - so glad that consumers are so well protected.
